The Greatest Show on Earth
The carnival is over
Every loser got a prize
While the winners grabbed the power
They were deafened to the cries

The ghosts were neatly packed away
Com-part-ment-al-ized
Scattered footprints only mark the sand
Sorrowed memory pains the eye.

Yet the carousel keeps turning
Fat ladies sing out loud
The acrobats do backflips
To the cheering of the crowd.

The freaks were trained like animals
Directed by the clowns
Newspapers filled with nightmares.
When the circus came to town.

Downtrodden hopes for open-hearts
The ringmaster fears such birth.
Rues the day the throngs cease laughing
At the greatest show on earth.
FranticI can still smell the city.
Glorious blooms,
carpet of colour.
The flower market
…and the morning.
You bought me tiny yellow buds.
Chocolate and pistachio nuts for breakfast.
Your warm hands.
Artist's fingers entwined.
An outdoor table.
Strong coffee.
Heads bowed, almost touching.
Hushed whispers,
laughter in harmony.
I thought I knew you from a time before my life

It could have been any city in the world.
A writer's description.
Clear blue diamond sky.

And now
I miss your fire.
Possibility still bubbling under my skin.
Endless yearning
Endless looking for you
Glancing
left, right
sometimes frantic!
